Back in America in the fall of 2019, I watched a TV program on NHK about Yanai. I thought it a quaint town. I had no idea that I would live there one day.
Yanai is a small town next to the Seto Inland Sea. In the past, it was a thriving port town. Today, Yania is famous for its many goldfish lanterns. There are many goldfish lanterns hanging from buildings on Yanai’s famous “white walled street.”
Yanai adopted goldfish as its mascot. The city uses the goldfish theme everywhere; I see goldfish in the streets, on products, in windows, at school and in the stores. There are goldfish everywhere in Yanai!
Ever since I was a child, I’ve liked goldfish. When I was young, my family had an aquarium with goldfish in it. They are cute and I enjoy watching them; it was fun to watch them just hang out and swim around. Later in life, I also had salt water tropical fish tanks and enjoyed them.
I have many hobbies and of them is searching for goldfish in Yanai. I like to do a “goldfish hunt” and take pictures of Yanai’s goldfish when I see a new one. It’s sort of a “digital collection” of Yanai’s goldfish – I go around town and take a picture of a goldfish and then post it here on the website.
